About Nexus

A Somali-Led Transformative Change

Founded in 2019, NEXUS Consortium Somalia is a Somali-led platform uniting eight of the country’s most trusted and experienced national NGOs, and two International Partners – Oxfam and Save the Children. Our establishment marked a critical shift in the aid architecture—positioning Somali civil society at the forefront of strategic planning, implementation, and decision-making in humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding efforts.

We were born from a shared commitment to challenge traditional aid models and to build a system where local ownership, community leadership, and institutional collaboration drive meaningful, contextually grounded outcomes. With active operations in all 18 regions of Somalia and Somaliland, we leverage deep community networks, technical expertise, and shared governance to deliver programs that are not only impactful, but sustainable.

Our approach is rooted in the Localized Triple Nexus, combining anticipatory humanitarian response, community-driven development, and peacebuilding under a single, integrated strategy. Through strategic partnerships, evidence-based advocacy, and targeted capacity strengthening, we work to transform systems, elevate Somali voices, and ensure that aid effectiveness is measured not only by delivery—but by dignity, resilience, and lasting change.

Our Members

NEXUS was founded by eight local Somali NGOs, in partnership with Oxfam  and Save the Children. The members have long-standing reputations for operational excellence, community trust, and regional coverage. As the core members of the Consortium, they bring together over two decades of experience in delivering humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding programs. Each organization plays a vital role in shaping NEXUS’s collective vision, strategy, and impact.

Nexus redefines civil society leadership by integrating humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding efforts. It promotes local ownership, empowering Somali actors, government, and private sector partners to lead community-driven solutions.

The platform arose from donor challenges to create intermediary funding models for local and national NGOs (LNNGOs) following the World Humanitarian Summit. While tools like the Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF) have made strides, LNNGOs still receive only a fraction of overall funding. Nexus advocates for localization, equitable funding access, and decision-making power for Somali NGOs, breaking the dominance of UN and INGO-led systems.

Supported by Oxfam and Save the Children, Nexus exemplifies a collaborative, locally-led model to transform the humanitarian system.
